| Thallus attached firmly at margins, often loosely centrally, forming regular rosettes or becoming irregular and coalescing, to 20 cm wide. Lobes numerous, marginally radiating, 2–4 mm wide, often obscured centrally by congested lobules; margins contorted, entire or notched, often blackened with pigment spreading to centre, hollow, inflated; lower side of cavity black. Upper surface pale grey-brown or fawn, often blotched, with black or dark brown lines or patches, smooth or puckered, shining and faintly white-blotched or reticulate towards lobe apices, sorediate. Perforations sparse to scattered, 0.2–0.5 mm wide, rounded or irregular; margins not elevated. Soralia pustular, proliferating to form granular-sorediate clusters, ultimately coalescing centrally; soredia greyish fawn. Lower surface puckered, black, brown or red-brown marginally. Apothecia rare, scattered or grouped, 2 mm wide, adnate; disc epruinose, red-brown to brown; exciple elevated, crenulate-striate. Ascospores 2 per ascus, ellipsoidal, 39–44 × 21–23 µm. CHEMISTRY: stictic, constictic and menegazziaic acids and accessory compounds; medulla K+ orange, C-, KC+ orange, P+ orange. | ||
| Uncommon in eastern Tas., on rock, the ground or mosses in dry sclerophyll forest; also in Macquarie Is. and New Zealand. | ||
